Roger Jaffray

Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin, although sister islands, have two different historical backgrounds. A reference work resulting from the compilation of the company's archive documents, the local press and the testimonies and anecdotes of its sailors.

The “Maritime History of the French West Indies” series, of which this book is part, was honored with a mention from the Académie de Marine in October 2018.

Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin, two sister islands with different historical backgrounds, are mentioned here. We find a veritable fresco composed of sailors, ships, events at sea with sometimes tragic outcomes and maritime expeditions. Indeed it is an exciting journey through time that Roger Jaffray , former long-distance captain, invites us to do.
This work is the fruit of the long and patient investigations of a conscientious archivist coupled with a talented investigator. It is also a tribute to the seafarers who forged the maritime history of these islands that remained unknown for a long time.

Some interested readers will find traces of a still recent past. Others will draw from it the keys necessary to understand the present.
